What is an Off-Piste Ski Lesson?
If you are a seasoned skier looking for something new and want to head away from the groomed runs and work on your off-piste technique, an off-piste lesson is for you. Zermatt has a host of off-piste terrain from gentle and rolling to steep and challenging, so there is something for everyone.
With one of our off-piste instructors you will learn how to use avalanche safety equipment. Our off-piste ski instructors hold the top Swiss qualification or equivalence and also hold the Federal authorisation to take skiers off piste on non-glacial terrain. If you want to explore the glaciers of Zermatt, you will need a UIAGM Mountain Guide, rather than an off-piste instructor.
Timings and Prices
Our off-piste ski lessons are restricted to a minimum of 4 hours due to the nature of the lesson and the time spent during each lesson on safety checks and potential travel time required to get to find appropriate snow and terrain.

Safety First
With the added level of risk during an off-piste lesson it is well worth making sure you have done all the appropriate preparation:
Insurance: There is no insurance included in the lesson booking. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have adequate insurance that specifically covers you for off-piste skiing.
Skiing ability: Each member of the group should be able to ski black runs confidently.
Equipment: Each member of the group will need to have the appropriate equipment with them: Shovel, probe and transceiver. You will be shown how to use these at the start of your lesson and we can help recommend where to obtain this if you do not own it.
Weather: Your off-piste instructor will prepare for your day out together. If the conditions are not safe for off-piste skiing, they will make the decision either to not ski or to stay on shallow slopes where risks are lower.
